What is your greatest temptation:
In men: a compelling presence
In food: sweet and salty snacks
In clothes: high heels; can’t wear them. I’d trip and fall. LOL
What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)? Books. I can’t help buying free books or those recommended by friends.
If you could have any kind of car, what would it be? A red Ford Mustang.
Your dream home – mountains or ocean? Mountains. I fell in love with Colorado in my early 20s, even checked out teaching opportunities there. Never made the move.
What inspired you to become a writer? I’ve always read. When my kids left for college, I wanted to do something for me. So I decided to write a romance. Rejected many times. But I kept with it.
Do you have a daily writing routine? If so, please share. I stagger out to the kitchen for coffee. Thank goodness for Keurig. Settle on the recliner couch with laptop. Check email when I really should get right to work, but I have to ease into the day. LOL
What is your favorite book? Too many to list. Lately I’ve been saying Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. Love the atmosphere she creates. Jayne Castle’s paranormal stories are right up at the top of my list, along with Linnea Sinclair’s sci-fi romances.
What is your favorite movie? Star Wars: A New Hope That started my love affair with sci-fi. The adventure, the romance. The possibilities.
Who is your favorite historical figure? Never thought about that question before. Susan B. Anthony and the other women who fought for women’s right to vote. After I visited the Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Fall, NY, I realized how much Susan and the other leaders did to get women the right to vote. Amazing women. I even used the info gleaned there in one of my books, One Red Shoe, a romantic suspense.
In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him? The hero of whatever book I’m writing or just finished. In this case, it’s Marsh Rayburn in Mission to New Earth. Since the novella is written in 1st person point of view, readers only see him through Sara’s eyes and his dialogue. As the writer, I have to know more about him, of course. He’s got a great sense of humor, but he can be very intense. Even though he lost out on being the commander of the mission to Sara, he supports her all the way. He knows what’s best for the team.
Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her? Same as the hero. Sara Grenard is the main character in Mission to New Earth. We see everything from her POV. She’s a peace-maker, a facilitator, a great team leader. She keeps her fears and insecurities about the mission hidden so as not to influence the other team members. She’s staunchly loyal to her team, and especially to Marsh. But, as you’ll see in the excerpt below, her first priority is the mission.
What do you have out now? Mission to New Earth is a science fiction romance novella.
Blurb:
Would you go on a one-way trip to explore a new planet? Would you do it to save humankind?
Earth’s overpopulation and dwindling resources force the United Earth Space Agency to expedite exploration of new planets for a possible new home. When new crises ensue—a giant tsunami and the threat of nuclear winter—the timeline changes. Eight years of training crammed into four. Sara Grenard and her team prepare for launch, but are they ready for the one-way trip? Will the Goldilocks planet prove just right for Earth’s inhabitants? Before time runs out.
Excerpt:
Then only Marsh and I were left.
I strolled up to the man I loved and put my arms around his waist. When I rested my head on his chest, I heard the thud of his heart. Normally, a reassuring sound that always made me go weak in the knees, it beat more rapidly than usual. He was still agitated.
“Hey, guy. Everything will be all right. We’re ready. More than ready.”
“I know. It’s just—”
Leaning back in his arms, I reached up and patted his cheek. “Settle down, big boy. I think Bill and Ana have the right idea. From Gloria’s blush, she and Tom do, too.” I gave him a long kiss. At first, he didn’t respond—still worked up over the latest simulation. Then he gave in, as I knew he would. Not to be smug, but Marsh did like my kisses.
His kiss turned hard, demanding, as he strained to maintain control. I wanted him that much, too. But not on the tile floor in the lav. The shower had possibilities. When he eyed the enclosure, I knew he was thinking the same thing. Too bad I had other obligations. That was me, duty first. I could be such a stick-in-the-mud.

New releases anytime soon? I’m working on the third book in my Alex O’Hara PI mystery series, The Case of the Meddling Mama. And the fourth in my sci-fi romance Outer Rim series, The Spy. I hope to have the first out before the end of the year, with The Spy following.

Somehow I skipped over the interview earlier. Enjoyed it, and I can so see you as a red Ford Mustang, Diane! And my favorite hero is always my latest, too, and my favorite book. Compelling presence is a great answer–I might have to go with intense eyes, which could lead to a compelling presence. Thanks for sharing yourself with us, Diane!

Glad you liked my woman in history. All of those women were so brave. Some went to jail for “inciting a riot” when all they did was carry signs encouraging the right to vote.

Great interview! I, too, love mountains, but also water (possibly a seal in a former life?) So–lucky me! I now live at Smith Mountain Lake–the best of both worlds. Highly recommend a move to the mountains–make your dream come true! Best wishes with your new sci-fi–it sounds compelling!

Thanks, Susan. You do have the best of both worlds. Besides the water (Lake Michigan) I have 2 of my grandkiddies nearby. Only thing that would make it perfect is if Son & family moved close.

So sorry I missed you yesterday, Diane! Great interview. I’m helpless against sweet and salty snacks…or anything that’s breaded and fried…or sweet. 🙂 Wishing you so much success with this newest book. 🙂

Leah, you & I think alike. A friend of mine makes a snack called PMS pie. Fritos covered with peanut butter (not sure what she thins it with). OMG is it good! Sweet and salty.
