The Remains in the Pond by Ann Swann

author giveaway, new releases, romantic suspense

Ann has graciously agreed to answer a few questions for us:

What is your greatest temptation:
In men: Dark eyes and a sweet smile – a six-pack doesn’t hurt (hey, that describes my hubby)
In food: Chocolate and/or nachos
In clothes: Sweaters and jackets – I have way too many

What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)? Books! I can’t resist buying books.

If you could have any kind of car, what would it be? I had a Camaro SS. I want another. Of course I also had a Jeep CJ5 that I loved. Nah, I’ll go with the Camaro. Speed can blow away depression on a sunny day (if you have the right music and it’s loud enough).

Your dream home – mountains or ocean? Both! One for winter, one for summer.
What inspired you to become a writer? My childhood. I had to do something to make sense of it.

Do you have a daily writing routine? If so, please share. I like to write early in the morning before dawn creeps in and brings with it all my daily responsibilities. Darkness, my laptop, and a cup of good coffee, that’s my routine.

What is your favorite book? The Crystal Cave or Night Shift

What is your favorite movie? The Terminator or The Bourne series

Who is your favorite historical figure? Abraham Lincoln

In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him? Big John and his dog Turk are the co-heroes of Stutter Creek, my first romantic suspense. However, Woody (the young detective who reappeared later in Copper Lake) and Reece, my main character’s soul mate in THE REMAINS IN THE POND, are both blond surfers so it’s a really hard choice. Oooh, I left out Chet Boone, the critter catcher who caught our protagonist, Ella, in Lilac Lane. He was a real softhearted hunk. The best kind.
Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her? Gabi in THE REMAINS IN THE POND is sort of an anti-heroine. She runs away from her problems until she is forced—literally—to face them (when she is arrested for murder). Beth, the heroine in Stutter Creek, also tried to run from her problems. She was quite the whine-bag until it came down to saving the life of a child. That’s when she finally dug deep enough within herself to locate her previously-unknown store of courage.
What do you have out now? Excerpt, blurb, book trailers. Here’s an excerpt from THE REMAINS IN THE POND

I pulled out of the lot and circled the pond as far as I could go. The gravel road didn’t loop around the entire thing, only about three quarters of the way, and then you were forced to turn around in the only remaining wide spot unless you wanted to get out and have a picnic beneath the single stand of oaks tall enough to give good shade.

Of course I didn’t need any shade now. And I really didn’t want to get out of the car. This seemed too weird. I put the car in reverse and executed a careful turnaround. When my headlights picked out the figure at the edge of the water, I inhaled sharply. It was not what I expected to find.

I rolled down my window. “Rose?” I called. “Is that you?”

A branch cracked, a shadow moved, and panic slid between my ribs like a blade.  The figure turned toward my headlights, definitely female. She wore her long hair lose and flowing. Under the moonlight, I couldn’t be certain if the woman’s hair was red or light brown.

“What are you doing here?” No answer. “Where’s Matt?” I tried to keep my voice steady, to show her I wasn’t afraid. I put the car in PARK and opened my door tentatively, putting one foot on the ground.

She stared into my headlights, one hand shielding her eyes like a sailor looking for land, and then, like a flash, she ran straight at me. Straight toward my little Honda with the window rolled down. Her hair flew out behind her and it was all so surreal that for a moment, I simply sat there, paralyzed. Then she raised her right hand above her head. In her grip, I caught a glimpse of silver.

New releases anytime soon?  I have two YA novels ready for editing. The first one is Book 4 in Stevie-girl and the Phantoms series. The second one is about a girl who paints—and causes a school-wide ruckus because of it.

BLURB:

Senior prom is the happiest night of Gabi’s life. Her crush has just revealed that he is every bit as infatuated with her as she is with him. When he has a car wreck and is transported to the hospital in a coma, Gabi feels as if she’s taken a knife to the heart. But his jealous cousin, Rose, sees her chance to give the knife an even harder twist. She convinces Gabi to meet her at a local parking spot outside town. It’s a night that will change several lives forever. One of the girls will return, and one will become known as the remains in the pond.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And Wait for it! Another exciting excerpt!
I pushed my glasses up and took a deep breath. “We were in love. I know that’s what teenagers always think, but in our case, it was true.”
The unsmiling detective simply stared at me and pulled out his little notebook. His burnished head gleamed under the fluorescents.
Why wasn’t he writing in that notebook? He just held it, as if he found nothing I said worth noting.
The room grew cold and I began to shiver. Probably some sort of tactic; turning down the temperature to make me uncomfortable. Just like this little waiting game. Waiting me out to make me talk. I’d seen enough crime TV to recognize these schemes. I took a sip of the Diet Coke he’d brought—to make me feel grateful, I suppose—and immediately regretted it because it made me need to burp.
I let the little bubble of gas explode in my closed mouth and began to talk to cover the sound. “We fell in love at prom. We were both with other people. I went with Asa and he brought Rose.” I sat up straighter in the hard-backed chair and hoped I’d said enough to placate him.
The detective sat chill, one ankle propped on the opposite knee. I got the impression he wanted to be my best friend.
I don’t know why I started talking again. I think it had something to do with the way he looked at me, as if he already knew everything I wanted to tell him, because yes, suddenly I did want to tell him. I’d held onto the truth for too long.
I wanted to tell him everything about that night.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Ann has been a writer since junior high school, but to pay the bills she’s waited tables,delivered newspapers, cleaned other people’s houses, taught school, and even had a short stint as a secretary in a rock-n-roll radio station. She also worked as a 911 operator and a police dispatcher.
Ann’s stories began to win awards in her college days. Since then she’s published novels, novellas, and short stories. But even if no one ever bought another book, Ann wouldn’t stop writing. For her it’s the cathartic pause in a sometimes-crazy world. Most of the time, it even keeps her sane.
psychic, Psychic Powers, Sci-fi/fantasy, telepathy
GENRE: Sci-fi/Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Telepathy creates as many problems as it solves, as most of the members of the secret organization x0 would admit. When new member Lola discovers another group of telepaths with a completely different approach, those problems multiply at the speed of thought.

Soon, Lola’s family and friends are in danger. Lucky for her, she’s not your average budding psychic. Each person with whom she is close has a special gift of their own. That’s good, because it’s going to take every power they possess to keep this other group from succeeding with their plan to eradicate x0.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Lola often thought that she didn’t spend enough time being thankful for the simple yet wonderful things in her life. The warm cup of coffee in her hand was a miracle wrought by mysterious beans picked on the other side of the world, roasted in the sun and flown thousands of miles to her hometown. She smelled the rich aroma as she watched her twenty-something son graciously repair the tire of an elderly family friend.
Her son was kind and patient as he listened to Maurice tell stories of flat tires from long ago, feigning interest in the tales or possibly even feeling it. Either way, Lola was appreciative for her son and for her friend and for the warm cup of coffee in her hand. She had just moved on to gratitude for the blue winter sky and the quietness of the street when she saw the large black SUV.
“Oh for God’s sake, not you people again,” she muttered.
Maurice heard her thoughts and looked up, but there wasn’t much he or Zane could do as the vehicle turned into the driveway and five men in masks carrying guns stepped out. Again.
Lola turned to yell to Alex, Xuha, and Yuden in the kitchen, then heard the front door bang open and felt the familiar sting in her neck.
Not that again, too.
It was the last coherent thought she would have for a while.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Sherrie grew up in Western Kansas thinking that there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.
She published her first science fiction short story long ago, and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next story. When it finally came, it declared to her that it had to be whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.
The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down and explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.
Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. “It’s about time,” were his exact words.
Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie’s head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book collection. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She’s been wide awake ever since, and writing away.
We are all in the gutter, but some are looking at the stars.  This may be slightly paraphrased but the idea is there.  It’s very thought provoking, especially at this season.
GENRE:  Erotic Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Ian has wanted Olivia from the moment they first met. They shared a torrid one-night-stand in Scotland a year prior and never spoke of it again. Now they are business partners, and Ian has plans to woo Olivia back into his bed permanently.

Eric Thomas is a drummer from the superstar rock band, The Harbingers. When he meets Olivia, he knows there’s something different about her. He wants her – and not just for the night.

But when the two Doms cause a stir with their antics on Pleasure Island as they each attempt to win Olivia, they will be forced to contemplate another means of attaining their prize. Can they convince Olivia to experience the fantasy of a ménage with them? And will what happens on Pleasure Island stay that way?

Publisher’s Note: While this steamy ménage is part of the bestselling Pleasure Island series, it can be read and enjoyed on its own.

Excerpt:

Adrift and unsteady, he braced himself against the swells as the ferry moved through the cobalt waves like a hungry sea creature.

Eyes shielded behind a pair of aviator sunglasses, Eric surveyed the rest of the passengers aboard Goddess of the Sea. In addition to their boat captain, Deke, a Dom with the bearing of a boxer, there were four couples present on deck whom, after a quick perusal when they first arrived, he had ignored.

He wasn’t intentionally being an ass. Not this time.

As the drummer in an internationally known rock band, maintaining anonymity was difficult at best. Out in public, even on the way to an exclusive resort catering to the BDSM lifestyle, Eric tempered his interactions with people. It was safer that way. Then he didn’t have to worry about it ending up in the tabloids.

And on Pleasure Island, with the non-disclosure agreement every guest must sign, he could sue the pants off anyone who leaked information to the press.

Besides, out of everyone on board the vessel, it was the lone beauty on deck who captured his attention. The name of the ship, Goddess of the Sea, perfectly described the willowy blonde poised at the stern. In skinny jeans that accentuated her endlessly long, supple legs and a gauzy peasant top that rivaled the sea in color, she had seized his full attention.

He had to admit she was stunning. The way the sunlight illuminated the waves of her golden tresses that stopped mid-back made her look like a beacon, a shimmering gemstone. No man, no Dom worth his salt, would want to deny himself the pleasure of her company.

He’d done enough of that.

Denying himself. That stopped, now.

Eric’s intentions on Pleasure Island were simple. Find himself a submissive and fuck himself into a state of orgasmic bliss over the next two weeks. Hopefully one that he could maintain once he left the island.

Easy. Simple.

And, he prayed, the most effective cure for his malaise. Not to mention, it was doctor ordered: the fun, the frivolity to be had on the island, as a way to battle his misery.

And damn it all, he needed to feel happy. It had been too long since anything had stirred his lethargy. Not a stay at an exclusive facility in Switzerland to help his depression, where his bandmates believed he was getting it on with a ski instructor. Not all the accolades, fame or fortune that had come his way through The Harbingers’ success.

And he hated that it made him sound like a pansy ass wanker.

Over the next two weeks, on what was becoming the legendary Pleasure Island, he would soothe his battered soul and the depression surrounding him. And the beautiful woman standing all alone was a damned fine place to begin.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Anya grew up listening to Cardinals baseball and reading anything she could get her hands on. She remembers her mother saying if only she would read the right type of books instead binging her way through the romance aisles at the bookstore, she’d have been a doctor. Anya is a bestselling and award-winning author published in multiple fiction genres. She also writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance under the name Maggie Mae Gallagher. It’s been 10 years since it snowed in Houston.  It was hard to imagine this morning when I looked out the window at the white.  Courage didn’t want to go out in it, but he did when I ventured forth in my dressing gown!

Here’s what December 8, an historic day, looked like in Pearland, Texas.

Through the wreath on my front door.
