Easy, breezy aquaponics:  Fish are raised in a tank, then water from the fish tank is pumped to the plants.  Bacteria have converted ammonia and nitrite to nitrate which the plants absorb from the nutrient rich water.  Filtered, clean water is returned to the fish tank.

Existing hydroponic and aquaculture techniques are the basis for all aquaponics systems. The size, complexity, and types of foods grown in the system can differ as much as in any system in other distinct farming disciplines.  Lessons in aquaponic farming are available in the classroom and on-line.

Here are a few tips to make your aquaponic adventure smooth and easy:

·         Fish should be provided proper aeration and kept from cold or excessive heat

·         Wear gloves when feeding the fish and when you handle plants and the gravel, avoiding human pathogens from infiltrating the water.
