The fascinating culture of the Romany (Gypsies) Part Two

Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors

Today I’m continuing to share the fascinating culture of the Romany (Gypsies). If you missed Part One, check out last week’s post on July 24th.

brother-1363761_640

It is no secret that the Rom have suffered persecution, prejudice, exclusion, and discrimination for centuries. The “Gypsy” stereotype includes a criminal, fortune-teller, blacksmith, thief, and musician, a dark-complexioned, shadowy figure. But why do so many of us harbor this unfair prejudice? Perhaps because of the Rom’s nomadic existence, lack of a solid religious belief, and exotic clothes and lifestyle. Their dialect is distinct and related to Sanskrit. Their tradition is oral, for they didn’t have the luxury of building libraries.

I explore many of their beliefs in my novels, including Seeking Patience.

One belief shared by all Rom is cleanliness. Mahrime means unclean or polluted. To avoid mahrime, clothes covering the top half of their body are washed separately from clothes on the…

Blog Hop 2016

The word “Summer” conjures memories of watermelon, homemade ice cream churns humming, and darting through the spray of a garden hose.    Oh, and tomatoes fresh from the garden, slices layered between two slices of bread spread with an abundance of Duke’s Mayonnaise.

Such a wonderful time…summer…if you can beat the heat.  I love to drive with the top down (drop top), but in 95-100 degree weather, it’s less than enjoyable.   Your face feels like it’s melting, and the wind in your hair threatens to solder your mane to your head.

I live in Houston.  It is HOT and humid. But I wouldn’t trade places with someone living in a cold climate.  I tend to hibernate during the winter.  Still, most seasons, I’m at my computer in an air-conditioned or heated office—along with many of us who live in the world of technology–and writers!

On to the Summer Treats – This recipe makes a cool starter in the heat of the Good Old Summertime.

ICED CUCUMBER SOUP

Butter for frying

1 small onion, peeled & finely chopped

2 cucumbers, peeled, halved, seeded and chopped

1 Tablespoon Flour

1 Pint Hot Milk

½ Chicken Stock

Salt & Ground white pepper

½ Teaspoon/Grated Nutmeg

To Finish:  Few Drops Green Food Coloring

1/4 Pint fresh cream

2 Tablespoons chopped fresh mint

Melt butter in saucepan. Add the onion and cucumbers, cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for a further 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove the pan from the heat & gradually stir in the hot milk. Add the stock. Return the pan to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Lower the heat, half cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.

Puree the soup.  The soup should be the consistency of thick cream.  Cool, then chill in the fridge until quite cold. Add green food coloring, mixing well.  Pour into chilled serving bowls, swirl with cream and top with chopped mint.

The Wild Rose Press published two of my novels, Love For Sale, a sci-fi romance, and Gambler’s Choice, a romantic suspense.  In Love for Sale, the hero is a sentient android, totally indistinguishable from human, programmed for love.

Love for Sale – Blurb:

March Morgan still believes in true love, but her faith in finding her soul mate is slowly LoveForSale_w9468_medvanishing. She’s been married but never in love. So, it is a miracle to find that fantasy exists on the last page of a glossy women’s journal. Mayfair Electronics, Ltd., in black and white, offers Love for Sale. The London firm has engineered sentient androids indistinguishable from humans. She flies to England and meets the man she has been searching for her entire life.

Christian requires no programming to love March at first sight. He’s handsome, cultured…absolutely perfect…and a little different from the other androids. He has an unexpected independent streak. March signs on the dotted line, buying her dream man. They return to Houston, but soon her past and his future threaten their Happily Ever After—indeed their lives.

Gambler’s Choice is set in the equestrian world starring people passionate about the horse.

Gambler’s Choice – Blurb:

GamblersChoice_w9208_750Becca McQuaid came to England to find the perfect horse but instead met a darkly mysterious challenge in Austen Heath, Baron of Hampton. She’s determined to buy Austen’s stallion Gambler’s Choice. He’s determined not to sell, but the rivals are thrown together by an accident that leaves Austen with a broken leg and the threat he’ll never ride again.

Austen Heath has the title, heritage and manor house…but not the fortune. Becca is wealthy. Her charms are irresistible, but he believes she’s shopping for a Ladyship to go with her money. He has another reason to hold the sexy blonde at arms’ length—the unexplained disappearance of an old friend everyone thinks was his lover. When her body is discovered on his property, he becomes a suspect in her murder.

TWRP has a stable of talented writers.  Hop around the blog and meet some of them.  There are other prizes to be had on the Hop.  I’d like to offer my winner a pair of sparkling angel wing earrings (pierced).  If my winner happens not to have pierced ears or not want earrings, I’ll send an eBook of Love For Sale followed by an autographed cover flat.

Can he recapture her heart? Or has he lost her forever?

Arianne never imagined she’d see her notorious pirate lover again. Though her heart sings with joy at his return, she knows he hasn’t come back for her but for the treasure he left behind. She agrees to help him find it, but can her heart withstand one more adventure with him?

FEATURING:  Heartland

by Sara Walter Ellwood

BLURB:

Sex, drugs, and country music. That was the lifestyle for Emily Kendall, a Texas girl who hit it big on the country music charts–until she found herself pregnant and battling addiction. Now out of rehab and seeking a new life for herself and her unborn child, Emily returns to her hometown of McAllister. The last thing she’s looking for is trouble, no matter how good it looks in uniform. . .

A widower, single father, and former Army Ranger struggling with PTSD, Sheriff EJ Cowley hashis own demons to battle while keeping folks safe. The last thing he needs is a troubled celebrity speeding through town in her bright red Mazerati. But when someone from Emily’s past threatens her safety and the peace of McAllister, EJ has no choice but to protect her. And soon both will learn there’s more to the other than meets the eye. And that wounded hearts can love again. . .

Excerpt:

MediaKit_BookCover_HeartlandAs he reached in the glove box for his pad of tickets, he whistled between his teeth. A Maserati with a Tennessee plate. His computer was in his official Tahoe, which was parked at the station, but he could ticket the driver and enter the citation when he got to the office. Opening the door, he picked up his hat from the side seat and put it on his head as he slid out of the pickup. He caught the female driver watching him through her side mirror and got a glimpse of dark reddish hair and big-lensed sunglasses covering most of a slender face from her reflection.

She straightened in the leather seat and smiled as he stopped at the driver’s door, ducking down to look at her. Despite the sunglasses covering her green eyes, he knew her. The magazines and TV hadn’t done her justice. She was one of the most beautiful women he’d ever seen. Her auburn hair was styled in a short pixie cut that seemed to make her look even more like a fairy than he’d thought of her when she was younger. A sudden flutter hit his gut and rattled his thoughts. What the hell was he nervous about? He’d met famous people before. Besides, he’d known this girl all of her life.

In spite of the reason he’d stopped her, he smiled. “Well, if it isn’t Emily Ritter. Haven’t seen you around here for years.”

Her smile fell the moment the name Ritter slipped out of his mouth. “I don’t go by that name any more and haven’t since I was fourteen.” She shot back as she glanced at his badge and the nametag above it on his uniform shirt. “Edward James Cowley.” The smile returned, but this time it held a hint of mischief. She must have remembered how much he hated his full name and used it to get back at him for his flub. “You’re the sheriff now? You get out of the Army?”

“I got out a little over two years ago, and yes, I’m the sheriff.” EJ pushed the brim of his hat over his forehead. God, he had to focus. “The reason I stopped you wasn’t to engage in small talk. You were speeding. I’ll need to see your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.”

“C’mon, since when does anyone care about speeding on this old stretch of cow path?” She removed her sunglasses to reveal eyes the color of spring grass. They’d always seemed to mesmerize him, even when she was a kid, and now wasn’t any different. “Hell, the only people out here are my family, the Ritters, your family, and the Campbells.”

Her voice broke the trance her beauty put him under. She definitely wasn’t the girl who’d followed him around when she’d come over to the Double K to visit John Kendall, never knowing the old rancher was her grandfather.

“Actually, I own the Campbells’ place. They sold the Arrowhead Ranch a year ago after Uncle Joe had a heart attack. He and Aunt Sally moved to Arizona to be closer to my mom and dad.” He had to remember this woman wasn’t the innocent little girl he’d teased any more. Or a stunning woman he’d like to get to know better. From what he’d heard on the radio and from the tabloid covers he’d read while standing in line at the grocery store, she’d turned into a drug addict and party hellion after marrying a British rock star. He didn’t even like her music anymore, and there was a time, he’d thought she had the voice of an angel. The thought of her throwing away her talent on booze and drugs sent a spear of anger through him. Someday she’d undoubtedly end up as dead as Raquel had. He held out his hand. “Your driver’s license, Ms. Kendall.”

She reached for her purse, setting on the passenger’s seat, and pulled out her license, then rummaged through the glove box for her registration and insurance papers. As she handed the items to him, she smiled the sweet, breathtaking smile he’d seen splashed on magazine covers and award shows, but it never entered her hard eyes. “Fine. Here you go, Sheriff Cowley.”

BLURB:

It’s 2011 and compressed natural gas has taken over from the coal producing steam machines of the Victorian Age. Alice Windsor, Princess of York, follows her mischief-making cousin, Edmund of Wales, back to 1851 where Prince Albert is hosting Britain’s Great Exhibition.

Alice soon finds herself over her head in trouble. Edmund is determined to help Prince Albert build a dirigible and the prime minister appears intent in preventing her from stopping Edmund. Alice knows it’s too early for the massive flying machine to take to the air. Complicating matters is the passionate Grayson Kentfield, Earl of Swinton. Alice can’t stop her pulse from pounding when she’s near him.

Can Alice give her heart to a man from the past while working to stop Edmund from changing history?

EXCERPT:

MediaKit_BookCover_VictorianScoundrelGrayson nodded his head and smiled at Keira as Alice trailed after her cousin. She caught up to Edmund, and placed her hand on his elbow to catch his attention. She leaned close, keeping her voice low.

“I have news.”

“Oh?” He plucked a glass of wine off the tray and handed it to her. She held up two fingers, meaning she wanted wine for her and Grayson. He gave her another glass.

“I have my necklace back, Ed.”

He raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Really?”

Alice glanced at her purse. “It’s in there.”

He frowned. “Well, I guess we can go home now.” “What’s the frown for?” she asked.

“It just so happens I’m enjoying Keira’s company.”

Alice bunched her lips, agreeing with his sentiment. “And I’m enjoying Grayson’s.”

Edmund grabbed two glasses for himself and they wandered back to their dates. “The right thing to do is go home, Cousin,” said Edmund.

“Well, yes, but…”

“But, what?”

“Grayson invited us to his estate in Sandhurst next weekend — Keira as well.”

“Naughty, naughty, Cousin.”

Finished! Her General in Gray

sun-risingThis morning, I finished polishing my 20,000-word ghost story, Her General in Gray.  The General is the ghost of an American Civil War General, John Sibley Allen (my grandfather’s actual name), who uses all his spooky tricks to chase away the new owner of his plantation, Allen Hall.  Autumn Acardi Hartley isn’t going anywhere.  This feisty Northern lass stands up to the General in fine modern fashion.  I emailed the story to my editor.  Fingers crossed for its fate.  If she rejects the submission, however, I’ll self-pub it on Amazon.

Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors

Back in the dark ages when I first started writing, I had this brilliant idea to write about a fallen angel, first person POV, so I wrote I, Lucifer (not a bad guy or not too bad most of the time).  I worked on it on and off through the years.  It won a couple of non-published awards including the SARA (San Antonio Romance Writers).  But rejections came in from every publisher to whom I submitted the rather long book.  (I used to write LONG but now I find it difficult to write so verbosely).  I shelved it in my computer.

MorganDArcyAVampyreRhapsody_w10500_medOne day, after signing a contract with The Wild Rose Press, for my Morgan stories, releasing soon, I decided to try the book again with this new/old editor from the Black Rose line.  She published my first short story many moons ago.  She took it!  We should soon be…
