Story By Tess Cooper

Thirteen words in a want-ad turn Tess Cooper’s world upside down after she signs on as a paranormal research assistant to the mysterious Davin Egypt. He reveals a world of grave robbing, clockworks artifacts in blue amber, antique revolvers that fire strange ammo, and powerful forces beyond human comprehension.

As ancient occult energies threaten to destroy her city, Tess must use her journalistic instincts to stay one step ahead of the public works director, Drew Dawson, whose agenda seems bent on destruction rather than maintenance. And possibly murder, but will anyone believe her?

Yeah, right. When garbage trucks fly.

If Tess teams up with the hunky police lieutenant, Kirk Gunther, and the pale, oddball Mr. Egypt, they might be able to save the city in time. That is, if Egypt even wants to. And if Tess overcomes her phobias long enough to do battle in Granddad’s 1983 Subaru Brat.

Things are about to get icky.

Excerpt:

Egypt sat behind the desk, leaving me to stand. He switched on the light. “Nearly all of my work is done at night. I trust that won’t be a problem.”

I generally had no plans at night. But that wasn’t my primary concern. “What exactly is the job?”

His brows squeezed together in mild confusion. “I thought I made that clear. I am an occult researcher, you will be my research assistant.”

“So, what, we look things up in books, cite them for papers?”

Egypt leaned back in his chair. “Hardly. Do you know what the word occult means, Miss Cooper?”

I couldn’t recall actually introducing myself to him. But I must have, right? “It means ‘hidden,’ or ‘covered.’ From the Latin. Same root word as occlude. Synonyms would be, oh, arcane or esoteric.”

“And do you believe we could research the hidden, the arcane, by browsing published media?”

Well, put it that way. “I suppose not.”

“Not, indeed.”

“So, what, you go out hunting for ghosts and that?”

His mouth made a little moue. Not, indeed. “We will seek out events caused by apparently hidden means, examine them, study them, and place them into context with other apparent occult phenomenon.”

I suddenly recalled Lieutenant Gunther’s reaction.

“You’re looking into the grave robberies for the police.” I carefully worded it so it wasn’t a question, the way Egypt did.

The moue spread out into almost a smile. “It seems that even if we are not on the same page, we’re in the same chapter. At midnight, we need to examine the graves at the City Cemetery.”

Frankly, I had developed an aversion to City Cemetery. All I needed was to fall in another loose grave, which seemed far more likely in the dark. “At midnight? Why not right now? It’s forty-six degrees and sunny. We’re supposed to get six inches of snow tonight.”

Egypt leaned forward, clasping his hands on the antique desk. “That forecast is incorrect. And as for midnight, it is a most important hour in occult research, as you will learn.”

Sgt. Reckless – An Amazing Mare

Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors

Because I’m a horse lover in the first degree, our own Mary Ricksen shared the video link with me, and I was inspired to share these two links about Sgt. Reckless, a sorrel mare who carried ammunition in the Korean War. This horse of Mongolian breeding was honored as one of 100 American Heroes, along with Washington and Lincoln, and promoted by the Marine Corps every time they had a chance to give her tribute for her service in the battlefield.

330px-Reckless_with_Sgt__LathamHer dam was a race horse.  In October 1952, she was purchased for $250 (the video says $350) from a Korean stableboy at the Seoul racetrack. He needed money to buy an artificial leg for his sister. Members of the US Marine Corps bought Reckless and trained to be a pack horse for the Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Anti-Tank Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

RTR - Teaser 1 (2)Ages 18+. Contains strong language, explicit sex and elements of horror. This book is the final installment in the Immortal Touch trilogy.

*****

What good is immortality when every moment is agony?

The vampire Ash has returned from his watery grave, proving that death is merely a minor inconvenience. Picking up where he left off? That might not be as easy. Because someone else is vying for Sami’s attention – the last person he ever would have expected.

Fulfilling her desire for immortality seems the surest route to winning her favor. But for Sami, this gift will come at a terrible price. One simple lie of omission is all it takes to send her spiraling into a terminal state of madness. And as the last remnants of her sanity slip away, Ash can no longer deny that her maniacal behavior is putting them all at risk. His perfect angel has become a perfect liability.

But can he find it in his heart to destroy her?

Excerpt:

MediaKit_BookCover_RedTideRising“Haven’t you ever been in love?” She didn’t say not counting Ash, but the implication was there. His impalpable presence, even when left unmentioned, remained a tangible constant hanging in the air between them.

“I’m not sure such a thing exists.”

“Ah, c’mon. In all these years, you gonna tell me you never had a solid healthy relashumship?”

Tristan snorted a laugh. “You don’t even know what you’re saying. Look at you, drunk off your ass trying to talk to me about relationships.”

“I’s just askin’.”

“What would you know about a healthy relationship anyway? You seem to gravitate toward the toxic. There is nothing remotely healthy about any of the decisions I’ve seen you make.”

“So forget relashumships, Mister Grouchy Pants. Izz all about sex then, right?”

“Apparently.”

“Okaayyy…” Sami pursed her lips, trying to hide a smirk. “Then why don’ you tell me ’bout the guy from Comic-Con. What’d you say his name was?”

“I don’t remember.”RTR - Teaser 2

“Oh, sure ya do.”

“I don’t.”

“I don’ belieeeeeve yoouuuu…”

“I don’t caa-aaare…”

“But see, now I gotta know. Gimme the lowdown. Were you gettin’ it on with the comic book guy? Did Superman put it to you?” For some reason, the whole idea struck her as screamingly funny. Clutching both hands to her stomach, she began to giggle uncontrollably. “Did he wear his cape? Wuzzee faster than a speeding bullet?”

Raising an eyebrow, Tristan shot her a derisive look.

“Wuzzee more powerful than a locomomo…locomum…” She tried to stifle the next eruption of giggles and failed. “…choo choo train?”

“You’re pushing it, little miss.”

“No, I really wanna know! I’m totally serial. Whassit like to get pounded in the ass by th’man of steel?”

In barely the time it took for her to blink, he rolled over on top of her, trapping her between his arms as his silvery gray eyes glittered down at her defiantly. She stared back at him in wide-eyed surprise, her urge to laugh instantly squelched. There was something decidedly wrong here. And that something was pressing against her nakedness with rock hard force.

His mouth mere inches from hers, he whispered, “Would you like for me to show you?”

“Huh?” she squeaked.

“Well, you just asked…” Never taking his eyes off hers, he moved his lean hips to grind against her slowly and rhythmically. “…what it was like to get pounded by the man of steel. I took that as a request to find out. Or did I misunderstand?”

“H-huh?” she echoed.

“It’s possible that I did. But no, I don’t think so.” Transferring all his weight to one arm, he slid the other hand beneath her to grip her bare ass. “I think that was an open invitation. So…should I turn you over on your knees and demonstrate? Hm?”

Six Simple Tricks to Lose Weight

19 Sunday Apr 2015

Posted by Linda Nightingale in Uncategorized

Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors

It’s Spring, and last Sunday I blogged about the Caveman diet. This week I’m adding six simple tricks to lost weight. Thanks to Men’s Fitness for sharing these ideas.

1. Eat More Protein
Open up those cans of tuna and start eating. Eat eggs for breakfast instead of cereal and toast. Your body works harder to digest protein than carbs, so you’ll burn more calories. And protein is much more filling. A good tip is to eat one gram of protein per body weight pound. And no, I’m not sharing mine. 🙂

tuna

2. Drink Green Tea
In a 12 week study, people who drank 4-5 cups of green tea per day lost two pounds more than their non-green peers. Drink a cup before your work-out for an even greater benefit.
Why does this work? A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that green tea improves insulin sensitivity…

My Once and Present Love…Horses

Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors

Gallop_animatedIn what seems like the distant past, I was a semi-professional horsewoman. I bred, trained and showed the magnificent Andalusian horse. I can’t expound enough on the virtues of this breed—they are loyal friends, beautiful, talented, agile (they are the bullfighting horses of Spain!) and even the stallions, though fiery, are docile.

After I sold my soul mate, Bonito, my partner of many years, I bought a pure white stallion named Alegre. Bonito was my first Andalusian stallion and remains king of my heart of horses today, though I loved Alegre dearly. While Bonito and I showed in almost every class in horse shows from dressage to musical freestyle (we did a performance to The phantomPhantom of the Opera) to hunter hack, Alegre and I played. We’d share a beer and a carrot at a small, local horse show or at the Florida Renaissance Festival. We were buddies. He…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know everyone is anxious for the blurb and excerpt, but R.J. Merle kindly agreed to write a post.  Enjoy!
The Craft of Writing Fantasy
One of the interesting aspects of crafting Fantasy fiction is presenting a world, actions, abilities, or behaviors that are out-of-the-norm in a manner that makes those traits believable and plausible in your story.
As you can see in the overview blurb, the Children of the Elements Series features fantasy attributes.
When nature refuses to be controlled, can mankind endure? Brainwaves altered by a covert government project based out of the Secret City of Oak Ridge, the Children of the Elements are brought together and tested as weapons of mass destruction. Their struggle to free themselves and survive in the hostile East Tennessee Mountains creates massive chaos and threatens to bring about an apocalypse.
Savage Winds, the first book in the series, shares the story of a little girl able to direct the wind with her wind play, and features the technique of presenting extraordinary features in a normal, every-day world. The children live in the East Tennessee Mountains and their psychic gifts are a part of their daily lives. Also, techno-geek Stedford Thackett, an eighteen-year-old whose story spans all five books, with his awkwardness and clumsiness, tends to ground the story more deeply in reality.
Even in fiction where the worlds are fantastical, there tends to be normal aspects of the characters that are endearing and relatable to the reader, so that the fantasy characteristics of the story tend to be accepted as real and believable.
Basically, blending the implausible, as seamlessly as possible, within the plausible assists in presenting more believable story aspects and presents the story happenings as plausible when crafting Fantasy fiction.
BLURB:
SeriesGraphicSavage Winds (Children of the Elements, A Secret City Science Fiction Adventure Series, Book 1)
A dangerous conspiracy unfolds…
In Author R.J. Merle’s whirlwind start of the Children of the Elements series, a clumsy teenage techno-geek struggles to protect kidnapped children from a covert government organization responsible for creating their abilities to control the five elements.
A mighty wind…
Eighteen-year-old Stedford Thackett’s conspiracy theorist brother ensnares him in a real life children-as-weapons plot, while a determined scientist grooms happy-go-lucky five-year-old Darcie Lynn Carpenter to use the wind as a deadly weapon.
Out of control…
Despite the firm hand of Scientist Nora Hicks, Stedford struggles to rescue the kids and escape, even as Darcie Lynn fights to gain control of the surging power of the savage winds.
A Word-o-Gram for the series would include descriptions to include Psychic Powers, Telekinesis, Apocalypse, Electro-Magnetic Pulse, Zombies, and Mutants.
EXCERPT
BookCover_SavageWindsDead men don’t tell tales, yet the late project head’s records held revelations kept from Scientist Nora Hicks for far too long.
In an office deep inside an East Tennessee mountain, Nora snapped a black leather-bound book closed.
Except for the carved stone ceiling, the office mimicked a non-descript working office in Anywhere, USA. Bulky military-issue metal and wood furniture stood as a harsh legacy to the covert Secret City project and to the starkness of her life.
Sitting at the borrowed hulk of a desk in a dank underground office, she asked, “Why was this kept from me?”
Across the desk in a guest chair, General Gardner, with thin hair sprouts sprayed into place, said, “Ever since Oak Ridge existed but did not even appear on a map, the city continues to hold and foster more than its share of secrets. As a trusted senior scientist and manager of the project, Dickenson claimed you and your son were the only ones involved.”
“How long have you known there were more of us?” Her grip on the desk’s metal edge forced her gloved hands to stop shaking. The usual underground chill pressed into the heat of her temples and an off-putting tartness oozed over her tongue.
Were Scientist Daniel Dickenson not already dead, she would kill him with her bare hands.
Slowly.
two relaxed  people lie on  sand  at sunset background
Excerpt
Stepping into the warm water with her, I need her like I need my next breath. I snake my arms around her and pull her to me. I can’t stop the groan that comes out when her wet skin hits mine. I’m a guy; I know all about showers. However, a shower with Liane is beyond my wildest fantasies. Our tongues come together as I step us backwards and press her gently into the wall, hoping it’s not cold. She doesn’t make a sound, so she either doesn’t care or it’s warm enough. I smooth her wet hair away from her face as I deepen our kiss, tilting my head so I can tell her everything I want with my mouth.
She moans, her hands finding me and making my eyes roll in my head. Yeah, this entire night is going to be what saves me for the next few months, thinking about all of this right here. I slow down our kiss and pull away, putting my lips at her ears. “Wanna race?” I tease. I love playing with her; it’s one of my favorite things to do.
“Race?” She looks at me, a gleam in her eye. “We’re starting a new kind of race?” Her hands are still caressing me, and I can barely form words at the sensation.
“Yeah,” I mutter, putting my hands over hers so she will stop for a second. “We’ve raced our whole lives, right? It’s part of who we are. So why not have a race now?”
“What are we racing to?” She looks me up and down, her eyes stopping at the evidence of my desire for her.
I lean over and whisper in her ear, and she giggles, looking up at me with wide eyes. “Really? And what does the winner—or loser—get?”
I wink at her. “The winner gets to pick the next location.” She gets exactly what I mean, and I see the competitive gleam come into her eye.
“Well, let the best man—or in this case, woman—win,” she says. All I know is, I’m not losing because I already have the grand prize. Her.
Couple Holding Hands
Excerpt
The first thing I notice is that the man is seriously beautiful. His body is cut and sculpted like he spends hours a day in the gym, and even in the dim light from the pool deck, I can tell he’s tan. His board shorts hang low on his hips, and the defined cuts of muscle on his chest and abs is enough to send women running to him and dropping at his feet. Had I been a single woman, he would definitely be my type. My eyes lift past his impeccable body to the face and head that’s attached, and that’s when my heart completely stops. I must’ve gasped out loud, because I feel Mia turn and look at me as he gets closer.
I feel my mouth drop open as his eyes meet mine for the first time in years. “Blake.” He stops in his tracks, both of us staring at each other for what seems like every moment of the time we have been apart. I can’t believe he’s standing here, and had it not been for Mia standing next to me, I might’ve thought I was dreaming.
Matthias wore his leather vest with steel ringlets over a maroon woolen tunic. His yellow hair and beard were wet from the breeze. He checked his armor and weapons. He had a sword and a shield. The shield was round and made of reinforced planked wood with an iron center. A short sword and dagger hung from his waist. Luras wore his black leather tunic with steel ringlets and brown leather pants. The hood of his dark green cloak was pushed back. His two sabers were sheathed across his back.
“Are you ready?” asked Matthias.
“Yes. How is your back?”
“Better. Nelos did a good job.”
“Good,” replied Luras.
“It will be chaos soon … when we reach the island,” said Matthias.
“I suspect as much.”
“Stay close. There will be a push to move forward. It sometimes fails and falls back. Make sure you are not too far forward. Men often find themselves closed in, isolated. They get lost in the fight and find themselves surrounded. Know where you are and where others plan to be. If we stay close and keep our wits, we will live and make it to the ruins,” said Matthias.
“Good luck to you,” said Captain Dowr, as he approached them.
“And to you,” replied Matthias.
“I will be here; you will be there. You can have my luck. You’ll need it,” said Captain Dowr, grinning.
