Heart Healer (The Heart Healer Series Book 1) by [Bowes, Leslie]

Catherine Andrews is an English woman living in the 1800’s. Her father sells her to Blake Von-Clyer to be his wife to pay off debts owed to Mr. Von-Clyer. Catherine soon finds out Blake is a cruel and horrible man.

On their wedding night, to escape his cruelty, she throws herself into the river. Death is better than marriage to a beast.

Christopher King is living in 2014 doing his best to raise his young son Ryan after his wife left him. One night, Christopher finds a woman in the river unconscious and barely breathing. She is also wearing old fashioned clothes. Christopher does everything in his power to help the young women. When Catherine regains consciousness, she finds herself in a strange and unbelievable situation. Terrified, she does her best to keep her guard up against Christopher. But as she gets to know him, she can’t help but fall for the man who saved her life. When Catherine’s dangerous past comes back to haunt her, it has Catherine and Christopher fighting for each other and their love.

Excerpt

“That’s true, but I don’t need a servant. I need a wife.”

Catherine dropped the spoon as her whole body shook. What was her father planning to do? Hard work? A wife? What was going on? She was not her father’s slave to trade as he wished. She was his daughter. Too nervous to turn around, Catherine prayed that she heard wrong.

“What did you say?” her father asked, shocked.

“You heard me.” Mr. Von-Clyer laughed. “You had no problem selling her to me as a servant Mr. Andrews, but now that I want her for my wife your conscience haunts you. What’s the difference? Either way your debt to me is paid.”

“Catherine, get over here now!” her father yelled drunkenly. The longer she stared at the vein in her father’s neck; she realized that she was making him angrier than Catherine had ever seen before.

She slowly walked over to the table and stood in front of her father. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she watched him drink his last bit of wine.

“You will be Mr. Von-Clyer’s wife to pay off my debt.”

“What debt?” Catherine asked angrily.

“Catherine, do not speak unless you are spoken to,” her father snarled.

“What debt?” Catherine yelled.

Her father jumped up from his chair with an angry shout, bumping the table, but James jumped in front of him.

“You cannot treat Catherine like that, Father. She is your daughter and my sister, not your slave!” James yelled.

Catherine’s father was having none of that. He lunged for James, but Catherine got in between them before her father could do anything. She knelt in front of James and wiped his tears. All the while she prayed for strength.

“Thank you, James, but I need you to go to your room.”

“But, Catherine—”

“No buts. Go to your room and stay there until I come for you.”

As soon as James was in his room, Catherine’s father grabbed her arms and shook her hard.

“Don’t you ever speak to me like that again, Catherine! Do you understand me?”

“Yes, sir,” Catherine whispered, scared for her life.

“Good. Now go with Mr. Von-Clyer and pay off your debt.”

“Father, I beg of you. Tell me what my debt is?”

Oath of a Warrior by Mary Morgan

This is a BIG celebration for the release by The Wild Rose Press of Oath of a Warrior.  The author Mary Morgan has agreed to be subjected to an interview all for your enjoyment.  🙂

Interview Q&A from Mary Morgan for Linda Nightingale

Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C

Adaptable, Bard, Compassionate

Which genre or genres do you write or prefer to write? And why?

Historical, Paranormal, Time Travel, Fantasy. It’s a mixture of everything I love—from Celtic Mythology, history, and a yearning to return to the past. Often times, I’ve stated I’m a woman in the wrong century.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Listening to Celtic music. I’ve often stated that music is my muse. I have a huge collection of instrumental music on my computer. It fuels the emotions. The only time I don’t listen to music is when I’m doing edits from my editor. I need total concentration.

Do you have a favorite snack that you like to munch on while writing?

Yes! Dark chocolate and almonds.

Do you have a hobby?

Gardening and baking. My garden helps to center me and being in the kitchen enables me to create something delicious.

Do you read your reviews on your books? Do they influence your story at all?

I always read my reviews, and no, they don’t influence me. They’re opinions, regardless if they’re good or bad reviews.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Before I begin to write, I take three deep cleansing breaths. It’s my own “quirk” for centering me into the story. It forces out all the distractions.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

No.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

The great Irish King, Brian Boru (941-1014) in Ireland. Brian led the Irish to the peak of their Golden Age—from poetry, arts, saints, and scholars. A remarkable man.

What’s the one thing you would do if you could be your character for a day?

Time-travel to the past.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?

There will be two more books in the Legends of the Fenian Warriors. Next is Rory’s brother, Liam MacGregor. Recently, I turned in Liam’s story, TRIAL OF A WARRIOR to my editor. I’m now working on the fourth book, DESTINY OF A WARRIOR, and the hero is Aidan Kerrigan.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

Ahh…there are several, but one was that Erina was different. Especially in 17th century Scotland. She concocted love charms and was a healer. Yet, she never saw herself as a witch. Sadly, even in this century, we tend to look at others who don’t walk the same path in society as the majority of us as odd. I believe we are all unique and beautiful.

Thank you, Mary.

~~~~~
Blurb:
“You met them in the Order of the Dragon Knights. Now, journey to the realm of the Fae and witness their legends!”
Fenian Warrior, Rory MacGregor’s love conquests are legendary, but he has never spoken of the one mortal female who captured his heart. After his dark secret is finally revealed, he is ordered to return and seal the wounds left open by her death. Yet, he finds the timeline altered and swears an oath to rewrite fate, even if it brings about his own death.
Erina MacIntyre is known for her healing herbs and love charms. Determined to aid others, she refuses to listen to the whispers that call her a witch. When a Highlander steps forth into her path, he ignites a thread of strange familiarity and sparks a flame of desire she is unable to control.
Can the destiny of two lovers find love once more among the ashes of death and betrayal? Or will history repeat itself, leaving a scorching path of destruction for both mortals and Fae alike?
Excerpt:
“Erina, mo ghrá,” he groaned, taking her mouth with savage intensity. She tasted of honey and spices, filling him completely and easing the torment that continually plagued him.
Breaking free, he placed his hands on either side of the door. Giving her all of him required something more from Erina. Without the assurance of accepting him for what he was, Rory would be a lost man.
“Are ye certain ye want to ken all of me? I want ye as sure as the sun rises and sets over the land each day, but ken this, Erina—there is more to me than a simple bedding. There are things about me that might frighten ye. What I’m about to share with ye may cause ye to question my existence, or worse, my sanity.”
Her laugh was seductive and soothing as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “From the moment ye stepped through those trees that first day, I realized ye were not like any man I had encountered. It was as if the trees parted and ye came forth from inside them.” She brushed her fingers along his brow. “For one, ye have the most mesmerizing eyes and they shift colors.”
“And the second?”
Her face turned a rosy glow, yet, she held his gaze. “I thought your body chiseled from the old Gods, especially with all the markings on your back and arms.”
His gaze swept over hers. “I am nae God, Erina, though some would call me a demon.”
She traced a finger down along his arm and shook her head. “Ye are not a monster, but I am nae fool. Ye are not like other men, Rory. I have seen the markings on your body elsewhere.” Her finger curved around his shoulder and he trembled. “They are similar to the ones on the standing stones carved by the ancients.”
Rory fought the tide of emotions sweeping through him. She had come to the conclusion all on her own. “And ye would not flee if I told ye I was one of those ancients? One where the bards wove tales of giants who lived thousands of years ago among your own people? Others would call the story incredulous and filled with heathen words.” He held his breath, fearing her reply.
The smile she gave him speared straight to his soul. “Nae. I would not flee.”
 ORDER OF THE DRAGON KNIGHTS
  Order of the Dragon Knights: The Complete Series - A Digital Boxed Edition by [Morgan, Mary]
Dare to journey with the Dragon Knights of Scotland!
They were an ancient order descended from the great Tuatha De Danann, a tribe from the Goddess Danu. Half human and half fae, each blessed with mystical powers. They were also given holy relics and guardianship over the dragons.
With the dawn of Christianity, the dragons were systematically hunted down and slain leaving only one. The Dragon Knights took her from Ireland to a land across the sea, settling in the Great Glen near Urquhart. The clan was known as the MacKay clan, descendants from the MacAoidh.
Yet, there were those who deemed the Order had too much power, and they tried to possess it for themselves. They were evil and twisted, and their plan succeeded one fateful night.
The Clan MacKay is no longer.
The Dragon Knights are scattered across the land.
Yet out of the darkness, they will each fight for redemption, and the women they love.
Fearing her “gifts” will be used to defeat her sister Matilda, Elspeth escapes the Black Mountain priory that has sheltered them since their father’s death, only to find herself indebted to, of all men, a Scotsman, whose loyalties are in question…
Read an Excerpt:
“What’s wrong, Malcom?”
Peering back at the donjon, Malcom pulled Elspeth toward Merry Bells, rueful that he would be putting his faithful horse back on the run. “I’ll explain when we’re away.”
“Malcom! You are frightening me!”
“I’ll explain everything when we’re gone,” he said again.
She tried to free her hand from his. “My dress!” she protested. “It was a gift.”
“There’s a coffer full of rich gowns at home that belonged to my grandmother. You may do with them what you will, and if they do not please you, I will buy you a hundred more.”
Still, she struggled to free herself. “But your silver, your hauberk, your blade?”
“I have plenty of silver,” Malcom reassured, refusing to release her. “My armorer will fashion me another. And it was an old dirk; I’ll get myself another.”
“It was not an old dirk,” she argued. “Tis shiny and new and bears the sigil of your house!”
“Our house,” he reminded her. “What is mine is also yours.”
“Wait!” She gasped, sounding alarmed. “My Llanthony tunic, Malcom! We cannot leave it here, or he’ll know.”
They reached Merry Bells and even before he lifted her up to put her on the horse, he untied Merry Bells from the post. Then he grasped Elspeth about the waist and set her atop his saddle, praying Merry Bells was up to the challenge.
“’Tis like he already knows,” he told her. “You must trust me,” he demanded. “As I trusted you.”
Chris has graciously agreed to submit to an interview, then we’ll get a chance to read the blurb and excerpt of her new novel Destiny of a Gargoyle.  So, let’s give the mic to Chris.
What is your greatest temptation:
 In men: Tall and blonde. Nordic types. (YAY ME TOO)
In food: Cheese and anything with cheese on it or in it.
In clothes: Yoga pants. The most comfortable pants in the world.
What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)?
I love to play games and sometimes get distracted by them on Facebook.
If you could have any kind of car, what would it be?
An Aston Martin Vantage. Sunburst Orange
(I’ll have a black one, please)  Note from another Aston fan!
Your dream home – mountains or ocean?
Mountains with a lake. I do love the ocean, but not the weather that can happen at the coast.
What inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always had stories in my head. Just seemed obvious to write them down.
Do you have a daily writing routine?  If so, please share.
Not really. It depends on what day, if I have client work, and when yoga class is.
What is your favorite book?
I actually don’t have one. I know that sounds odd, but I don’t. I love anything by Edgar Allen Poe.
What is your favorite movie?
Probably Zoolander. I’ve seen it many times and laugh every time I see it.
Who is your favorite historical figure?
I’m not a big fan of history so I don’t have one.
In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him?
Trey McCrane from Blonde Demolition. He’s a bad boy, but truly loves the heroine. She broke his heart and he never really recovered. He would do anything to get her back.
Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her?
My favorite heroine is Chelsea James from Incendiary. She’s tough and smart and will do what needs to be done.
What do you have out now?
Just out is the first in a trilogy of gargoyle shifter romances. Destiny of a Gargoyle is about the oldest Foley brother.
He was born in a time when magic ruled the Earth.
Gargoyles protected fairies from goblins. His family was a group of elite gargoyles who were assigned to protect a specific fairy. His father’s dereliction of that duty cursed his sons to become stone and wait.
Now reawakened in the twenty first century where no one believes in magic how is he going to convince his fairy that she is one and that she is in danger from a goblin?
He must do that without falling in love with her.
New releases anytime soon?
Destiny of a Gargoyle just came out.
Destiny of a Gargoyle
Donal Foley was born in a time when magic ruled the Earth.
Gargoyles protected fairies from goblins. His family was a group of elite gargoyles who were assigned to protect a specific fairy. His father’s dereliction of that duty cursed his sons to become stone and wait.
Now reawakened in the twenty first century where no one believes in magic how is he going to convince his fairy that she is one and that she is in danger from a goblin?
He must do that without falling in love with her.
  • Excerpt
“She’s it,” Donal said.
He could communicate with his brothers telepathically. Otherwise his time in stone might have driven him nuts.
“You’re sure?” Sean said.
“I’m sure. She’s it. I can feel my heart softening. She must be the one that I am supposed to protect,” Donal said.
“Wow. After all of these years. And of course Donal finds his first. Lucky guy,” Declan said.
“He is always the lucky one,” Sean said.
“If I were that lucky I wouldn’t have been stuck in stone here with you two lugs,” Donal said.
He would have lived and died in his own time. Instead of watching what had happened to the fairies he’d been born to protect. They’d died off and somewhere along the line the fairies had forgotten who they were. He’d bet that Meg had no idea who she was.
That made his job even harder. She wouldn’t have any idea why he was protecting her. The fairies had gone into hiding when the humans took over the world. They renamed his part of the island County Galway. What did that even mean?
He was Donal of Connaught. Not Donal of Galway. If he could sigh he would. He sighed in his head.
His brothers were stilling whinging about him being lucky. “I’m the oldest. You didn’t have to tell the Queen what our father had done. She could have made me stone and you would never have known what had happened to me.”
“Still, why do you get to go first?” Sean said.
“Because she is my fairy. Not yours,” Donal said.
He wasn’t going to apologize for finding his fairy first. He never would have thought they were going to find any of theirs. The fairies were all elsewhere and finding one from his own kingdom let alone another one had always been a long shot.
“What will you do?” Declan said.
“The Fairy Queen told me the rules before she left. I have to be in the fairy’s presence for a whole day before I lose the curse,” Donal said.
“A whole day. The sun must be in the same place for the beginning and the end?” Declan said.
“Yes.”
“How are you going to do that?” Sean said.
“I don’t know. She doesn’t spend that much time here, but I’m sure I have a few days to figure it out. I already feel as if I could fall off of this wall. Maybe I can go with her.”
“Without legs? Or only stone ones.”
“I don’t know everything, you mugs. I’m guessing some things here,” Donal said. “If you two be quiet and let me think maybe I’ll figure it out. You’ll have your chance and I get to sort out what needs to be done. That way neither of you mess it up.”
Pink Fuzzy Slippers Authors
Real, RealDoll (no I’m not stuttering!)!!  A talking, emoting(?) human-size, life-like sex toy.
I first saw the RealDolls on a Facebook post and had to learn more…like if they made male models.  I dropped that idea like a lava rock when I found out the price is a modest $10,000.  Not this week.
Abyss Creations is making Love For Sale—very reminiscent of my book of the same name.  Love For Sale was published in 2015, but the story goes way back to the 90s.  It began as a short story, won an award, and I thought ‘why not a novel?’
I digress.
One of the dolls, the one shown in the ads, is named Harmony.  A columnist from the Engadget visited Abyss’ facility and met Harmony. He said, “Harmony’s eyes are a window to an uncertain future.”
I am intrigued by AI used as loving companions—not so much as pleasure…
Yesterday after being in the shop for a long time, I picked Wings up at Century BMW in Greenville.  He must have been happy to be going home.  At one time, I was passing a slower car and looked down to see the speedometer hovering at 90.  Ooops.  Wings is sitting in the driveway (until I get the fiasco with the garage resolved).  On silver (well, really gray) wings…
Curse of the Ancients by Hawk MacKinney
As Craige Ingram climbed the stairs of the derelict building, that peculiar stench of a dead body hit him. It was the same smell no matter where—SpecOps SEAL encounter gone sour, or in a vacant, roach-infested apartment. Inside, his SEAL buddy-turned head of Buckingham Parish Homicide’s Investigative Support Division, Grayson MacGerald, was huddled with the coroner next to a swollen decaying corpse that was days old and hardly more than oozing dead meat. The PI inside Craige had a gut feeling that there was more to this than a dead body, and Craige’s Grannie always told him, “Trust your feelin’s.” But that was before Mihály Keaulescu set down two of his Black Falcon choppers on Craige’s Moccasin Hollow private airstrip in an uninvited stopover. It got worse. From his airstrip to Israel, to Turkey and a nightmare-dream of one-of-a-kind ancient artifacts that not only threatened the serene life Craige knew and loved at Moccasin Hollow, it would destroy the world.
Read an Excerpt:
The smell got worse as Craige made his way up the stairs. Like the smell of burning human flesh, a fermenting corpse gave off one of those distinctive odors one never forgot. Craige thought of the adage about it taking a strong stomach to work with a body that had been dead for a while. One never got used to it. Some memories weren’t pleasant—time on storm-swept beaches, digging for supplies buried in the sand, hidden under piles of rubbish, in dark alleys or trashed rat-ridden warehouses; huddled in black dark caves or stinking tunnels. Their Special Mission CTU team cocked and loaded for anything; prepared to deal out any necessary parcel of maimed, butchered and dismembered—or running for their lives the few times their cover was blown.
As Craige climbed to the second-floor landing, the smell went from bad to a sour-worse. He spotted familiar faces from the department’s forensic team; intent and focused around the pulpy lump with swollen pumpkin dimples where eyes should have been in one very bloated dead body. The corpse was well beyond the initial stages of being recycled. It no longer looked human after cooking several days in the sweltering oven of a Dixie mid-August scorching summer in this dreary one-flight walkup of apartments with no AC and painted-shut windows. The dreary apartment was busier than it’d been in years with lab and forensic techs bustling and sorting the pitiful pieces of the when and how of abandoned death. Near the peeling paint archway into a worse kitchenette he spotted Gray huddled with just over five feet plus, roly-poly Coroner-Medical Examiner Fred Dinkins.
Moccasin Trace, a historical novel nominated for both the prestigious Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction and the Writers Notes Book Award, details the family bloodlines of his protagonist in the Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series. Hidden Vault of Secrets and Westobou Gold, Books 1 and 2 in the series, have received national and international attention. Hawk is also writing a science fiction series, The Cairns of Sainctuarie.
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The authors will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
Just as travel agent turned reluctant sleuth Gabby LeClair is starting to gain some of the Aloha spirit, a business consortium from Chicago breezes into the Aloha Lagoon resort and offers to buy her business. The offer is tempting…but so is hot helicopter pilot Rick Dawson, making it a difficult decision. One that becomes even more complicated when a dead body is discovered in Gabby’s backyard, and she’s suddenly thrust in the middle of a murder investigation!
The dead man is a former beachboy attendant from the island. With a trail of broken hearts—not to mention jealous rivals—leading up to the beachboy, Gabby tries to uncover just who had it in for the late lothario. Is the female of the species really more deadly than the male? Or has the beachboy scorned one too many women for some other man’s liking?
Read an Excerpt:
Detective Ray wasn’t on my list of top guys on the island. I’d had a drawn-out encounter with him the summer before. He was brusque and all business when he was working. I’d never interacted with him socially, so as far as I knew that was the way he was all the time.
He touched the brim of his straw skimmer. If it had been any other man, I would’ve thought the gesture charming, but on just-the-facts-ma’am Detective Ray, it seemed a little rote.
“Good morning, Miss LeClair.”
“Detective.” I waited.
Her curiosity nearly a tangible entity, Janet stood so close behind me that if I’d moved I would have bumped into her.
“Detective?” Her voice rose in surprise, but for once there was no inflection of flirtation in it.
“What can I do for you this early, Detective Ray?” I asked.
His cop’s point of view took in both of us, and he touched his hat again. “I was just wondering, Miss LeClair,”—he paused, lifted his chin, and scratched under it—”if you”—he cast a speculative glance in Janet’s direction—”have anything to do with the dead body in your back yard.”
About the Author:
The USA Today best-selling writing team of Sally J. Smith (right brain) and Jean Steffens (left brain) make up equal halves of one totally functional writer’s mind. Creative and intuitive and organized and systematic? What could be better than that?
The two desert dwellers work together side-by-side, literally finishing each other’s sentences, putting together their novels faster and more efficiently than they ever could individually.
When their heads aren’t together over a manuscript, you’ll find them with their families, at a movie, the mall, or out-to-lunch—in the food sense, not the spaced-out sense, well…most of the time. Their current series include Jordan Welsh Mysteries, Mystic Isle Mysteries, Danger Cove Pet Sitter Mysteries, Aloha Lagoon Gabby LeClair Mysteries, and Digby Sloan Mysteries.
