He had tumbleweed in his blood, moving from one town to the next. Traveling to where there was trouble, Dalton Moon was hired to tame wild places with a fast draw and an iron will. Lacy Tyrell knew that Dalton wouldn’t be around long and she shouldn’t be tempted by him. But like the moon, his pull on her was a natural, powerful force that she was helpless to resist.

Read an Excerpt:

“Let’s not play games with each other, Lacy.”

“I’m not.” She glared at his hand holding her prisoner and he loosened his hold, but didn’t release her.

“You are. You’re used to winding men around your little finger, slaying them with your smile, and having them trot after you like Thumper trots after me.”

“That’s an interesting image you’ve dreamed up, Marshal, but you know absolutely nothing about me.”

“That’s true.” His tone was hushed, soft as a feather. “But I’d like to know you. Very much.” He let her go; his fingertips trailing down her dress sleeve.

Mesmerized by his lips forming the words, she didn’t move. The flash of his teeth against his lower lip when he’d said “very” and the attractive pucker of them when he’d said “much” held her prisoner. She wanted to know the feel of his mouth on hers. Very. Much. Without allowing herself another second to reconsider, she rested a hand on his solid chest to steady herself and rose on tiptoes. She laid her mouth against his in a quick, hard kiss. She heard the quick intake of his breath, felt his lips part in surprise, and his heart kick against her palm.

Charleston, South Carolina- Setting of Sinners’ Opera

Sinners’ Opera is set in Charleston, South Carolina, one of my favorite cities in the world (that I’ve visited).  It’s beautiful and on the ocean—two requirements of being a favorite. I’d simply love to live in one of the Antebellum mansions along the Battery. If you ever visit Charleston, take a buggy ride around the historic sights.

Charles Towne was founded in 1670, during the reign of Charles II of England.  This is important in the book because Morgan (the hero) became a vampire in 1659, and in 1670, the King sent him to the new colony to inspect its progress. Later, he returns to watch over a baby girl (the heroine) as she grows to womanhood.

Charleston boasts cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and pastel Antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, is across from the Battery.

Two beaches, Folly Beach and Isle of Palms, are near Charleston. Another requirement for a favorite of mine.

In nearby Mt. Pleasant, you can visit Boone Hall plantation. Some of the tours they offer are, “Exploring The Gullah Culture”, House Tours, Plantation Coach Tour, Black History In America Exhibit, Slave Street and History Presentation, Garden Tour, and a Butterfly Pavilion.

My personal favorite is the Dock Street Theater, America’s first theater. On February 12, 1736, the Dock Street opened with The Recruiting Officer. Flora, the first opera performed in America took place at the Dock Street. Now, the Dock Street is owned and managed by the City of Charleston. I was enthralled by it when I went for a concert. The Dock Street looks like a 17th century playhouse with rows of wooden benches in the orchestra seating. The boxes overlooking the floor are draped in dark green, almost black velvet. The stage backdrop is an antique tapestry of Charleston Harbor. Photo Credit:  By Frances Benjamin Johnston

The Battery is a street along the seawall on the Atlantic Ocean. The pastel and colorful Antebellum mansions cost in the millions. When I was writing Sinners’ Opera, I drove up and down the Battery until the residents must have thought I lived there…or was a stalker. I finally chose a house for my hero. It’s Roper House, a brick structure with green shutters and a Greek portico to the left. A beautiful house, but because the main attraction, the portico, is on the side, it looks like the house has its shoulder to the sea.  A house with secrets.

I’ve driven those cobblestone streets in my little red Miata, eaten at some good downtown restaurants (never made Magnolias for shrimp and grits), and have gone to the Dock Street for a piano concert.  Morgan is a concert pianist, an English lord, and a vampire.

If I haven’t yet inspired you to visit Charleston on your next vacation, what can I say?  Real movie stars are moving to Charleston, and it is one of the most concentrated centers of wealth in this country. It’s also famous for art (Spoleto), culture, and history—and entertainment galore.

#newrelease, #paranormalromance, 5-Star Amazon, @WildRosePress, Amazon, vampire books, vampires

Today Sinners’ Opera is officially released!  Below are the buy links.  The book is available in print and eBook.  Please drop by one of the links and take a look.  Here’s a quick excerpt:

Excerpt:

“Are you a bum?”  She cocked her head, one eyebrow arched.

“Do I look like a bum?”  I’d dreamed of changing the world.  How the Mighty fall.

“Well, yeah.”  She stressed the last word.

A bitter laugh burned my throat.  “Hold on to your dreams.  Dreams do come true.”  My hand shook, and I almost dropped the wallet engraved with my initials and the St. Averil crest—worthless reminders of a life left behind.

“Come closer.  I won’t harm you.  I promise.”  I folded the sodden currency and shoved it into her hand.

She gasped.  “Is this real money?”  Her eyes narrowed.  “Oh, my, it is.  A lot of money.”  An accusing gaze captured mine.  “Did you rob a bank?”

“The money is mine.  Now it’s yours.”  Thinking of a special little girl I’d taught to dream, I smiled wistfully.  “I must warn you.  Princes are in short supply.”

“You are an angel,” she whispered reverently.  “Grandma said angels didn’t always look like angels when they appeared to you.”

A sharp pain lanced my heart, sadness welling deep inside.  “I’m not an angel, child.  Run along home before you catch a chill.”

books by Linda Nightingale, Linda Nightingale, new releases, The Wild Rose Press books, vampire books, vampires

Halloween month, October 7th is Release Day for my paranormal romance and the 5-star reviews are already coming in.  Sandra Dailey said she told her husband every move the characters made.

Here’s what Uncaged Reviews had to say about Sinners’ Opera,

Sophisticated, arrogant, beautiful, darkness, love. Many things can describe Morgan D;Arcy….the passionate lover everyone wishes for…

…will haunt you long after you finish reading it.

This all-consuming love story of Morgan and Isabeau will enthrall the reader as they overcome the obstacles in their path to happiness.

Excerpt:

“Isabeau!”  Gabriel’s voice would forever strike a chord deep inside.

Morgan leaned over the mahogany railing, his eyes alight, his smile breathtaking.

“Morgan,” she breathed, her heart thudding.

Tonight, she’d caught him in his robe.  Riding mid-thigh, the green brocade smoking jacket showed fine, long legs.  Hair mussed, eyes sleep-misted, Morgan looked like a boy who’d just woken up.  The slender, muscled physique was all man.  Was he naked beneath the robe?  Her nipples tingled, imagining him nude and erect.

The handsome devil must have had one hell of a late night and slept all day.  The brunette’s face popped into Isabeau’s head.  Jealousy even tasted green.  God, what if the woman was still here!

Avery caught her hand, claiming her attention.  “Madam, do you like Beef Wellington?”

A languorous stretch elongated Morgan’s perfect body.  “Yes, she does.”

Isabeau frowned, opened her mouth to ask how he knew.  A flash in the corner of her eye, and Morgan stood at her elbow, his smile and his eyes sheer mischief.

“Sorry.  I shouldn’t have spoken for you.”  He took her hands, his touch sizzling over her.  “I can’t believe you’re actually here.  I’m delighted to see you.”

“Even unannounced?”  She squeezed his hands.  “I’m sorry about the other night.”

He shook his head, his gaze hot and intense.  “Think no more of it,” and her embarrassment evaporated.  “Please join me for dinner.  Avery has been eager to flaunt his culinary skills.  If you refuse, he’ll never forgive you, will you, Avery?”

“No, madam, I shan’t ever forgive you.”  The old gent gave her a mock stern look.

“How can I tempt you?”  Morgan bit the lower lip of a smile.

She laughed.  “Oh, I don’t know.  Do you have a piano by chance?”

He snapped his fingers.  “Avery, isn’t there a piano in the music room?”

The old man frowned, shaking his head.  “Sir, I believe there’s a piano in the music room but then we’d require someone to play it.”

“I can play chopsticks.”  Morgan touched her shoulder, zapping her knees weak.

“I can prepare a delectable Beef Wellington.”  Avery nodded emphatically.

Morgan’s Gabriel eyes caressed her.  “Sorry you caught me looking like this.”

You look good enough to eat.  She hadn’t spoken aloud, but Morgan arched a brow, his smile as enticing as it was wicked.  The man beamed sexual energy.

She flung a gesture of surrender and laughed.  “How could I refuse?”

It’s a Trust Thing by Peggy Jaeger!

04 Friday Oct 2019

Posted by Linda Nightingale in Uncategorized

Tags

author interviews, books by independent authors, contemporary romance books, It's a Trust Thing, Peggy Jaeger, The Wild Rose Press authors

What is your greatest temptation:

In men: quick wit and a devilish smile

In food: anything with chocolate as a main ingredient

In clothes: I go for comfort, everytime. Sweat pants, wooly socks, and a scrub top are my usual attire.

What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)? Resisting the urge to meddle, or give advice to loved ones.

If you could have any kind of car, what would it be? The flying kind in The Jetsons. I hatehatehate traffic. Going vertical during a traffic jam would be nirvana.

Your dream home – mountains or ocean? Mountains, for the solitude. I’ve seen too many disaster films where a tsunami takes out everyone who lives on a beach.

What inspires you as a writer? Music? Movies? TV? Books? Life inspires me. And people. I am a huge people watcher and can be extremely nosy. In a good way. Hee hee

What is your favorite pet:  Dog? Cat? Reptiles? Horses? I love dogs and cats equally and have had one of each at the same time. They were besties to the grave.

Do you have a pet? Please share. Not anymore. After my dog, then my cat died, I felt I needed a break for my heart to heal. Soon, though. I will be 60 years old in 2020 and the only thing on my birthday wish list is a pet. ( hopefully, one of each again.)

What  is your #1 item on your bucket list, and which are you most likely to achieve? I want to go to the Vatican and attend Mass said by the Pope.

What is your favorite book of all time? The Little Engine that could. Best book about self -motivation and actualization every written for children and adults. Hands down.

Do you prefer a day alone to write or a day with friends? Since I write full time, a day away from writing to spend with friends would be a gift.

Who is your favorite historical figure? Mary of Nazarath

In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him? Pat Cleary in FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Pat was the first hero I ever wrote who came to me fully formed. He’s so misunderstood. People think he’s a playa, but he’s really just looking for “the one.” He has to date a lot of women to find her. What’s that old saying about kissing frogs to find a prince? Goes for the Prince as well.

Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her?  Gemma Laine from my WILL COOK FOR LOVE SERIES. Gemma got her own HEA in book 2, A Shot At Love. Smart, talented, sassy and possessed of a take-no-prisoners personality, Gemma is my first and only alpha-female. She needed a strong, caring, total alpha male to tame her, and she found him in FBI Special Agent Ky Pappandreous.

What do you have out now?  It’s a Trust Thing releases on 11.1.19 and is up for preorder right now. It’s exclusive to KINDLE and KU: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y7LMJNR

Blurb:

*** this book is a digital offering only

Nell Newbery has trust issues. It’s hard to trust when you’re the daughter of a fallenfinancial scion who bilked people out of billions. Nell’s done everything in her power to keep away from men who see her as their ticket to fortune and fame. All she wants to do is run her ultra-successful business, HELPFUL HUNKS, in peace.

But it wouldn’t hurt to find a guy who doesn’t know a thing about her father’s felonious past; one she can give her heart to and trust it won’t come back to her battered, bruised, and broken.

Is Charlie Churchill that guy? On the surface he seems perfect, all polished manners and quiet mirth. Nell’s convinced he knows nothing about her, other than she likes superhero movies and views junk food as a food group.

Can she trust him to be what he appears to be? Or is he just pretending?

For Nell, trust is everything in life…and in love.
***Readers who like romances set in New York City, have strong, independent and sassy heroines and hot beta heroes, and happy endings will enjoy this book.

***This is the second book in the DotComGirls series, but can be read as a standalone novel.

excerpt:

Listen.” He took my hand in his and my nerves instantly ebbed away. “I enjoyed spending time with you this evening and I’d like to do it again.”

“Really?”

“Why do you sound shocked?”

I lifted a shoulder and pulled a corner of my mouth between my teeth. “Raincloud, remember? Plus—”

When I didn’t continue he squeezed my hand. “Did you not have a good time?”

“No. I mean, yes I did, not no, I didn’t. I did. It was fun.”

Lord, when had I turned into such a babbler?

He grinned down at me.

“It’s just, well…I don’t date much.”

“Neither do I.”

My head slammed back up. “I find that hard to believe. I caught some of the looks those women tossed you when they were leaving my lecture tonight.”

“I don’t date students. Ever. That’s a line that never gets crossed. Not by me.”

“Oh. Well.” I swallowed. “I’m sure you know other women who aren’t students.”

He nodded. “None of them, though, know Dr. Strange isn’t a rapper or confuse Stan Lee with a famous martial artist from the sixties.”

My pulse rate jumped a half dozen beats when he tossed me a cheeky grin, laughter in his eyes.

“I do have some talents,” I said.

He lifted his chin to something behind me. “I think this is your ride.”

With his hand still wrapped around mine, he walked me to the curb. Habit had me checking the license with the one I’d been texted.

“It is.”

He opened the passenger door for me and I got in.

“You never answered me,” he said when I was seated. “Would you like to do this again?”

I’d lived my entire adult life taking chances in my professional life but shying away from them in my personal one. The reasons to avoid becoming involved were valid ones, in my mind, and they’d served me well.

But there was something so different about this man, something that wanted me to finally give in and take a chance that he wouldn’t be like all the other men I’d gotten close to. He wouldn’t use me to his own end; he wouldn’t betray me; he wouldn’t lie to me about who and what he was.

And dammit, I deserved to have some fun.

All this ran through my head as he stood, patiently waiting for my answer.

It really didn’t take much effort on my part to make a decision. With a half grin and my gaze staying zeroed in on his, I reached into my briefcase and pulled out one of my business cards. While the driver waited, I wrote my private cell number on the back of it. There were only five people on the planet who had this number.

Now, Charlie did as well.

As I handed it to him, I cocked my head and said, “Maybe next time we can get through an evening without me needing first aid or being mugged.”

His jaw wide smile made my stomach muscles flutter. He leaned in, gave me a quick peck on the cheek and said, “Where would the fun be in that?”

New releases anytime soon? December 4, the second book in my MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN series from Wild Rose Press will be released. The title is TODAY, TOMORROW, ALWAYS. I’ll be doing a cover reveal on my blog as soon as it’s finalized. I love this story – it’s about oldest O’Dowd sister, Cathleen, and biographer Mac Frayne. Spark fly, shenanigans ensue, and love wins. Just my kind of story! Hee hee

THE APOCALYPSE WILL BE TELEVISED.

You know what they call me.

Camera-eyed killer. Spawn of the ruins. Man who stole a city.

These are not the names of a saint. But every legend has an origin story. And because of what I am, you can experience mine in real-time.

Fair warning, though: my life contains instances of drug use, bio-terrorism, aquatic street fighting, unsolicited retinal surgery, advanced warfare, amateur sex and straight-up murder.

But if you’re sick of sanitized heroes… then log in, lose yourself and become the Live Soldier. Because you’ve never met a marine like me.

Read an Excerpt

The balcony is moving, I realize dimly. No – the entire labyrinth is shifting, rearranging itself into a single great platform. A low dais now occupies its center, a ring of security guards creating a perimeter around it. But these alterations have nothing to do with the drug; robotics and stagecraft are at work here.

Then the world’s color inverts: white turning to black, blue become red etc. I’ve barely adjusted when direction follows suit, and now everything is upside down. Oh crap, this will be the Anex, how much did she –

A (to me) golden clad figure floats up (and therefore down) from nowhere, until her bare feet make contact with the dais. Fantastically tall and smooth cheeked with flint-grey eyes, purple hair pulled back from a sharp widow’s peak. Letiva made young again.

“Welcome,” she says, “to the newly completed set of my upcoming feature!”

The crowd is enthralled, but the Ladder is positively smitten. He takes a step in her direction, but his legs aren’t cooperating and – more distressingly – he has begun to emit a high pitched mechanical whine. I think it’s a hallucination at first, but the crowd can hear it too. Everywhere I look people are clapping hands over their ears, backing away from the Ladder as he careens straight for Letiva. Her security detail closes in –

– and I’m blown off my feet. Everything goes black, shifting abruptly to blue, a deep bass roar accompanying. Now I’m falling, spinning like a top, until an impact hits me with a façade of deep, gutsy red. This holds for some time, fading gradually into pearly white unconsciousness.

The Keys: Voice of the Turtle by Karen Hulene Bartell

01 Tuesday Oct 2019

Tags

books about sea turtles, Books set in theFlorida Keys, Karen Hulene Bartlett, romance, The Wild Rose Press

We have another victim, oops, I mean guest in the Chateau who has agreed to share a little about herself in an interview.  Karen Hulene Bartell is ready in the wings, so here she is!

What is your greatest temptation:

In men: Intelligent, polite man with a sense of humor

            In food: Finger-food smorgasbord

            In clothes: T-shirts

What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)? Traveling

If you could have any kind of car, what would it be? 4×4 pickup

Your dream home – mountains or ocean? Mountains

What inspired you to become a writer? Reading nonstop as a child

Do you have a daily writing routine?  If so, please share.

Yes, I write every morning, when I’m the freshest. By writing every day, I find my mind keeps working on the plot and characters, even during the hours when I’m not writing.

What is your favorite book? Gone with the Wind

What is your favorite movie? Under the Tuscan Sun

Who is your favorite historical figure? Laura Ingalls Wilder

If you were given the opportunity to spend a day with any person, living or dead, who would it be? Josephine Bonaparte

In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him?

Hud Beaulieu from Angels from Ashes: Hour of the Wolf. The broad smile from his finely-chiseled face caught Chloe’s eye as he started toward them. His lean body moved sinuously, like a tawny cat’s. From his taut pectorals, Chloe could see he worked out. Not what she would describe as brawny, his upper body was toned, well-defined. She caught her breath. Just about right.

As he approached, she noticed where his tan line ended, just above his jeans. He took off his captain’s cap and ran his fingers through his shock of silky, dark hair.

Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her?

Gwen Alton from Christmas in Catalonia. She lifted the window shade, hoping to see the last of Manhattan’s lights, but already their flight was over the Atlantic. All she saw through the port window was her reflection.

Mirror, mirror . . .

Shoulder-length blond hair framing her face, hazel eyes stared back. She smiled her signature half-smile, cynical, suspicious. Even in the dim light, her left eyebrow rose quizzically in a perpetual look of skepticism. She laughed at herself.

Story of my life. Take nothing at face value. Maybe that’s why I went into photojournalism. Through a camera’s lens, the focal point’s clear. I can see what’s real.

What do you have out now?  Excerpt, blurb, book trailers, buy links

Excerpt from my current Mainstream Fantasy The Keys: Voice of the Turtle:

Conveying this land to the turtles would be my way of leaving the world a better place.” She turned toward Ruth. “Does that make sense?”

Ruth nodded and gazed at Keya as if for the first time. Her cousin’s intentions were clear. “But legally, how can you will the property to the turtles?”

“Easy. I leave it to the Turtle Refuge.” Keya laughed inwardly as they meandered along the beach. “And this is where you come in. When you’re writing the brochure, add a few paragraphs about planned giving and charitable bequests…” Her words broke off as Keya stared as if in a trance.

Ruth looked at her. “What’s wrong?”

Her hand shaking, Keya pointed to a shady patch of beach half hidden by sand dunes. A lifeless hand lay tangled in seaweed, its fingernails broken and bloodied.

Racing behind the sandbanks to help, Ruth skidded to a halt, her heels digging into the sand. A woman’s bloated body lay staring at the sun, her eyes opaque and unseeing. “Do you recognize her?”

“No.” Keya shook her head as the cat gingerly approached, sniffing and meowing. But Earnestine said she smells familiar.”

“Knock, knock,” called a man’s voice.

Ruth flinched at the sound. “Who’s there?”

Blurb from The Keys: Voice of the Turtle:

Hours after arriving in the Florida Keys to help her cousin Keya create a turtle preserve, Ruth discovers a washed-up body and not one, but two apparitions—Maita, the angry victim’s spirit, and Bart, a swashbuckling ghost. Ruth’s curious ability to connect with the ghosts may help them move on, but how?

Keya is in a probate battle over her turtle-nesting beach. Land-hungry relatives want it bulldozed and developed. Like Ruth, she has a special gift—she can talk to animals. Between Ruth’s help and Keya’s unique ability, they work to save the property, but is it too late?

Can Keya save her beloved turtles? Can Ruth find Maita’s murderer or help Bart solve his 400-year-old mystery? There’s more than meets the eye to Keya’s land. Add in a dashing sailor who believes in her, and Keya may have more than she bargained for…

About the Author:

Author of the Sacred Emblem, Sacred Journey, and Sacred Messenger series, Karen is a best-selling author, motivational keynote speaker, wife, and all-around pilgrim of life. She writes multicultural, offbeat love stories steeped in the supernatural that lift the spirit. Born to rolling-stone parents who moved annually, Bartell found her earliest playmates as fictional friends in books. Paperbacks became her portable pals. Ghost stories kept her up at night—reading feverishly. The paranormal was her passion. Wanderlust inherent, Karen enjoyed traveling, although loathed changing schools. Novels offered an imaginative escape. An only child, she began writing her first novel at the age of nine, learning the joy of creating her own happy endings. Professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin, Karen resides in the Hill Country with her husband Peter and her “mews”—three rescued cats and a rescued *Cat*ahoula Leopard dog.
